Premenstrual Syndrome is collection of symptoms or sensations women experience as a result of high hormone levels (Estrogen and Progesterone). Symptoms include anxiety, irritability and mood swings. If estrogen predominates, anxiety occurs. If there's more progesterone, depression may be a complaint.

Estrogen and progesterone act by binding to its appropriate receptor. However, the variance of PMS varies between women from symptom free to extreme sensitivity. I would like to propose a study to see if these variance in women are due to genetic variant at the appropriate hormonal receptor level. I would need a large number of healthy female subjects, their hormonal level will be checked during ovulation, and will be grade their PMS on a scale 1-5 (1= symptom free 5= extremely emotional) Then, we would look for genetic variance between each level (more likely compare those in 1 and 5)

Haha cool idea schun. When rating the female subjects, don't tell the emotional women that they are acting emotional...they never seem to take that well :D

haha, VERY good point! I guess their rating status will remain confidential even to the subjects!

Make sure to ask your subjects about their birth control history. Apparently BC can affect PMS not only while taking the pills but also for months/years after (Lopez et al 2008).
